In this issue we celebrate 25 years of online learning in NZ schools. Look out for our 25th Anniversary publication coming out soon. If you have a story to share we would love to include it!

We are looking forward to our inaugural NEX hui in the second week of the school holidays in Rotorua. It’s not too late to join us. Please register if you would like to attend – there is support for travel costs. Attending ULearn during the week? Look out for us in the conference hall at Stand 44. 

If you just can’t get away to join us in person, tune into our keynote speaker Steve Wheeler, discussing Connected Pedagogy. Other PLD, that is flexible and accessible starting during the holiday break, is OERu open course on OER & Creative Commons. This follows on nicely from the work we have recently been doing with Tohatoha Aotearoa Commons.

Read up on the activities of the NEX online community in NEX Buzz and plan ahead to join in our Virtual Cafe sessions in Term 4.

In this issue we invite you to attend NEX online events. Learn about how ‘Knowledge Building’  can support students to become creative and innovative within a community of learners; explore how management of the Zoom dashboard can provide timely insights to support quality online connections; and make sure you Save the Date for our National Hui – 8th October Rotorua.

Darren shares an opinion piece on the Tomorrow’s Schools review and sees this as an opportunity to explore how we can bring meaningful system-wide change to education in the 21st century.  How will communities of online learning be part of a future schooling system?

We provide a regular update on the activities of our NEX online community and invite you to jump in contribute and participate in the conversation and sharing taking place there. Make the most of the promotional opportunity for new NEX members – this is being extended to the 10th May.

Nau mai haere mai to our first newsletter for our new teachers network NEX. Keep up to date with what is happening in online teaching and learning in New Zealand, share and access resources and ideas with your teaching colleagues, and find out about PLD opportunities and events. In this issue we: 

  • Invite keen and experienced teachers to put themselves forward to the NEX lead teacher team; 
  • offer funding for teachers undertaking research or inquiry projects; 
  • hear from one student about their experience as an online learner; 
  • and explore the current education setting in relation to teacher supply and networks of learning.

Online teachers and support teachers are making a difference for thousands of learners across New Zealand schools and homes. Our work is often invisible in virtual spaces and stands apart from other classroom teachers. We create learning experiences that extend our curious learners, ignite passions, bring together isolated students and make learning accessible to our children where ever they are. Our work is innovative, exciting and often challenging, but above all it is rewarding! A network for teachers involved in online learning is long overdue. Our aim is to create a learning community that extends beyond our own organisations, where teachers are supported to lead; strengths, expertise, and practice is shared; and teachers not only connect but collaborate with others who have similar interests and needs that is specific to being an online teacher and the diverse needs of our online learners.

We invite you to register your membership to NEX (if you haven’t already). If you have already expressed your interest as a member of NEX, our online community site is now ready for you to join. We look forward to seeing you in there.
